No it's really not better than top of the line shimano but these (or any microshift) are better than anything below 105. These might be comparable to 105 depending on your level of shimano fanaticism. What I like better is the independent shifting. Dual paddles. What I don't like (though it does make maintenance easier) is the external shift routing.

Overall I have the R8 triple on 1/2 bike and the R9 on 1 1/2 bikes. I am very happy with these. I've previously used ultegra and my two systems these are paired with are Shimano dura-ace on a road bike and Deore XT on a mullet gravel bike. These work flawlessly and if I wreck and ruin them I don't have to choose between food a cycling when I need to replace them. And well if you don't eat you don't ride so in the end food always beats new Shimano STI levers. Microshift for the win.;
