I needed an all metal shifter as dependable as bar ends (which I replaced) or downtube shifters. Most thumb style have too much plastic and on a long bicycle tour breakage would be unwelcome. These fit my trekking bars (replaced drop bars) and so far work great & I'm very satisfied with them (I bought both left and right). Basic but should last a very long time.;
