I bought stages power arms for road and gravel bikes and picked up the little round shimano tool to remove the plug. Before I received said items I was looking at a youtube video and saw this guy which looked much better. Indeed as it turned out not only did the shimano tool a cheap plastic disk with a grooved edge not fit very well into the plug mine were somewhat stuck in there and I would have had to get a set of pliers out to turn it. This thing gives you the leverage you need and also has the little hook to pull up the retaining clip. Park tools are always the way to go in my experience.;

I like the winged grip on this one better than the round one. Someone always over tightens the nut so this one gives you more leverage to loosen.;
