This was for an old old bike that had Shimano EF-51 shifters. Shimano no longer appears to make those but I found these instead and thought to give them a try. It turned out they were a perfect fit!

The box really contained everything I needed: the two shfiters with brake levers the cables the cable housings even brake cables + brake housings! The description did not say anything about cables or housings though so I actually had a separate set ordered from elsewhere and ended up with two. The Shimano set however showed some remarkable attention to detail: it had the small piece of shifter housing for the rear derailer ready for me! Making it isn't hard with the right tools and I was surprised to see it.

It is not necessary to change any of the cables or housings just to replace the shifters but it makes no sense not to: those cables touch everything and you have to pull them all the way back to the shifters to change them. Shimano's install instructions were quite lacking but YouTube helped me out. Everything installed without much trouble. Once I ran all the cables I adjusted all the tensioners and the trim bolts and everything worked great! My bike shifts quickly and accurately now like new.;
